Dental Contouring & Reshaping
Dental Contouring & Reshaping
For individuals who have chipped, cracked or irregularly shaped teeth, dental contouring and reshaping can be just the ticket for a more beautiful smile.
What is tooth contouring and reshaping?
Tooth reshaping, or contouring, is one of few instant treatments now available in cosmetic dentistry. Dental reshaping and contouring is a procedure to correct crooked teeth, chipped teeth, cracked teeth or even overlapping teeth in just one session. The dental contouring procedure is also a procedure of subtle changes. A few millimeters of reduction and a few millimeters of tooth-colored composite can create a beautiful smile with no discomfort to you.
Who is a candidate for tooth contouring and reshaping?
If you want your teeth to appear less crowded, lack chips and fractures, have decreased overlaps or to be without pits or grooves in the enamel, this procedure should be discussed with our dentists. With a little dental contouring, you can make a huge difference in the way you feel about your smile. Tooth contouring requires that you have normal, healthy teeth. It is a safe and conservative way to improve your smile. Teeth may become weaker if large amounts of enamel are removed, as a result tooth reshaping should be limited to minor changes or combined with veneers or bonding for the best esthetic effect.
How is tooth contouring and reshaping accomplished?
There are several techniques which can change the look of your teeth. These techniques are commonly combined to deliver maximal results. These include “contouring, bonding and veneers.”
Contouring
After a thorough examination and identifying any natural flaws our dentist sculpts the tooth, and imperfections are artfully eliminated or minimized. This is done with special diamond drills, sanding discs and mini polishers which may be used to remove small amounts of surface enamel gradually. Our dentists know exactly how much enamel may be removed to attain a beautiful effect without harming your teeth. Diamond strips are then moved back and forth between your teeth to shape the actual sides of your teeth. Your teeth are then smoothed and polished. Usually anesthetic is not needed and the whole procedure is done in one appointment.
Bonding
will cover any natural flaws applying a thin coating of a composite material on the front surface of your teeth. After selecting the appropriate colour, an adhesive composite material is applied to initially reshape the surface area. A high-intensity light then hardens the composite, and the entire surface is finely smoothed and polished. Bonding often accompanies contouring procedures.
Veneers
are sometimes used in conjunction with contouring. Dental veneers are very thin pieces of specially-shaped porcelain that are glued with specialized dental cement over the front of your teeth. They are the cure for teeth that are severely discolored, chipped, have small holes or pits, misshapen or crooked, or for the correction of unwanted or uneven spaces (diastemas). It is common to do 6 to 8 veneers in the front section of your teeth in order to attain the best cosmetic effect and the length of this treatment is approximately two weeks with 2 or 3 visits. The famous “Hollywood smile” is due to the application of porcelain veneers. Unlike crowns, veneers won't require our dentist to remove much of the tooth itself. The procedure is done by removing a very thin layer of enamel, taking an impression from which our technician will prepare your custom made veneers. More information about veneers.
