All-ceramic LAVA™ crowns
Lava™ creates all-ceramic crowns and bridges on a zirconium base in the front or side teeth.
Inspired by nature
The natural transparency of Lava™ crowns and bridges allows for the creation and achievement of phenomenal esthetic effects in perfect harmony with the surrounding tissue. Lava™ boasts durability, stain resistance and beauty which guarantee clinical success.
The Lava™ system allows for easy prosthodontic restoration, without the need to change any modern practiced clinical procedures, starting from taking an impression to traditional cementing.

Lava™ crowns and bridges – a new era in esthetic dentistry
Porcelain fused to metal crowns and bridges are still considered to be today’s standard modality of treatment, in which most cases enables complete rehabilitation of the oral cavity. Due to much knowledge on the mechanical resistance and well known methods in using porcelain fused to metal, this type of material is known to be universal and is used in most indications for permanent prosthodontic restoration.
From an esthetic point of view, porcelain fused to metal does not always meet the expectations of patients and dentists. The metal base is not transparent which causes light to reflect unfavorably potentially causing a fake and matted appearance of the restoration.
The minimized thickness of the upper portion of the porcelain crown may cause the dark elements from the metal base to transpire along the gums giving rise to a grayish tint and its nonesthetic look.
The esthetic limitation caused by the presence of metal conflicts with the rising expectations of the patient whom in turn choose a restoration based on material that is more natural looking and esthetically pleasing.
Lava™ guarantees clinical comprehensiveness characterized by the mechanical resistance and durability that of porcelain fused to metal crowns and simultaneously eliminating the esthetic barriers caused by porcelain fused to metal.

Porcelain fused to metal does not transpire light

Porcelain fused to metal base and LAVA™ base
In comparison to porcelain fused to metal restorations, all-ceramic restorations on a zirconium base permit the attainment of significantly improved esthetic effects, although not all systems are capable of rising to the expectations of modern dentistry.
Based on innovational CAD/CAM technology also known as “computer-aided design” and “computer-aided manufacturing”, the LAVA™ system meets all the needs of the patient and the expectations of dentists and technicians.
A perfectly matched chemical composition and the application of zirconium of the highest purity enable the creation of superb mechanical resistance unparalleled to other all-ceramic systems, whilst the milling process in the preliminary manufactured base reduces the possibility of defects and ensures increased durability of the finished prosthodontic restoration.
Porcelain fused to metal restorations are characterized by:
- lacking natural transparency,
- an unfavorable reflection of light and a matted appearance of the restoration
- an exposed rim of the metal base by the neck of the tooth
- a greyish tint by the gums
Lava™ crowns and bridges – 3M ESPE brand warranty
Choosing zirconium (Y-TZP), as a base material for prosthodontic restorations succeeds long term trials and experience, which were commenced by 3M ESPE in the beginning of the 1990s.
In 1999 the first trials began using LAVA™ material. Several universities and known research institutes conducted a series of clinical and laboratory studies, which concluded with results indicating the excellent optic and mechanical properties of the LAVA™ material.

Every zirconium LAVA™ base receives a 5 year warranty.
LAVA™ - How does it work?
The LAVA™ system is comprised of a touchless optic scanner which copies the model of the impression, a computer which is programmed to create virtual designs of the base restoration, a milling machine, and an oven with perfectly picked ceramics..

A unique computer-aided scanning milling process results in an exceptionally accurate fit and seal of the zirconium base. The average thickness in the displacement of the boundaries is approximately 30-50 µm and is comparable to that of porcelain fused to metal restorations.
LAVA™ crowns and bridges – Natural and Transparent
The base of a prosthodontic restoration using LAVA™ material is characterized by transparency similar to that of natural dentin. It can be dyed using one of seven dying substances.
LAVA™ ceramics faithfully recreates the conditions of the oral cavity thanks to a rich palette of basic and special colours, enabling the achievement of 16 colours according to the Vita Classic shade guide and 3 „bleach” type colours.

LAVA™ crowns and bridges – Natural
The LAVA™ system enables the preparation of the crowns over the gingiva, which saves the hard tissue and simultaneously guarantees a perfect esthetic finish.
More frequently we have encountered patients experiencing hypersensitivity to metal. Zirconium is characterized by having a high level of biocompatibility and due to this fact for the last thirty years it has been used in manufacturing prosthetic hip joints.
LAVA™ does not have a measurable melting point, is hypoallergenic, does not irritate tissue, has low heat conductance and does not take part in localized galvanization reactions.

Transparent and durable LAVA™ restorations
Clinical benefits using the LAVA™ system:
- natural transparency
- allows for better technical preparation
- patient comfort due to low thermal conductance
- absence of irritation and is hypoallergenic
