Post surgical care
Wound care
- Firmly bite on the gauze placed over the wound for 30 minutes, then remove it delicately.
- Do not smoke for at least 12 hours as smoking greatly increases healing time.
Bleeding
- A minimal amount of blood loss throughout your procedure is normal. In the morning you may find a blood stain on your pillow, and as a result we recommend using an older pillow case the first night after your procedure.
- Do not spit nor consume thick fluids through a straw as this increases bleeding.
- If you experience recurrent bleeding, place a small moist piece of guaze directly on the wound site and bite down firmly for 30 min.
- Keep your head upright or assume a semi sitting position.
Symptoms
- Certain symptoms are normal after a surgical procedure. It is possible to manage symptoms very well, but not eliminate them; by taking non-prescription or pain medication prescribed by our dentist or oral surgeon.
- Take your pain medication with a whole glass of water. Only eat a little should the medication cause nausea.
- If your taking prescribed pain medication, do not drive nor consume alcohol.
Diet
- It is important to drink a lot of water. Do not drink thick liquids through a straw, as this may increase bleeding.

Oral Hygiene
- Do not rinse your mouth or brush your teeth for the first 8 hours.
- Then delicately rinse your mouth with warm, salty water (1/2 a teaspoon per glass of water) every 4 hours
- Delicately brush your teeth with the exception of the surgical area.
Swelling
- Tissue swelling after surgery is normal. It is the greatest after approximately 48 hours and it begins to subside after 4-6 days.
