Tooth Whitening Tooth Whitening

Healthy and beautiful teeth can be achieved by proper maintenance on a daily basis. Thanks to meticulous hygiene any newly arisen deposits and bacterial plaques are instantaneously removed. Nevertheless, through years of consumption of different colored foods, tea, coffee and tobacco use, teeth begin to darken. Regular brushing may remove part of the dyes, yet those that have penetrated deeply into structural matrix are practically impossible to remove by conventional means.

Professional tooth whitening is solely performed at the clinic. Prior to the treatment it is necessary to remove any calcification (ultrasound scaling) and if any external surface deposits (air polishing). The patient is then ready to commence the actual whitening procedure which works by breaking up the stains by an oxidation reaction deep inside the teeth. The two most common methods used in contemporary whitening are: strip (mouth guard) whitening or via a „blue light” lamp.

Strip whitening works by first molding a soft silicone rail by the dentist, which then the patient fills with a whitening solution and applies over the teeth for several hours daily. Typically this treatment is repeated over a two week period and the effects last for years.

Whitening in conjunction with a special lamp is performed by applying a whitening gel on the surface of the teeth which are then illuminated by a lamp emitting blue light. In our clinic, for this purpose; we use an American system called Beyond. The blue light is emitted at a high frequency activating the whitening gel which is broken from hydrogen peroxide into water and hydroxyl ions. The ions work by binding to the internal stains in the tooth matrix and effectively break them apart. After the treatment, teeth become whiter from 5 to 14 shades according to the Vita scale (scale used by dentists to pin point the shade of teeth). The Beyond system is currently used in over 100 countries across the world and hundreds of people choose this form of treatment daily. The Beyond technique is completely safe and the technology is licensed and certified as a result of numerous years of research. Please note however, pregnancy and breast feeding is a contraindication for this treatment as clinical studies have never been performed on developing organisms. It is also recommended not to whiten teeth in children less then 14 years of age as well as in people with diagnosed allergies to peroxide and silicone resin.
